"Lest we forget" – Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day plans
On Remembrance Sunday (10th November) there will be a remembrance service at St Clement's Church, Leigh-on-sea at 3pm followed by a parade at 4pm finishing at Leigh-on-sea Community Centre where refreshments will be served.
At 10:30am, a parade will lead members of the Armed Forces Community, veterans, cadets and civilian organisations from Prittlewell Square to the Cenotaph for the Service of Remembrance.
The two-minute silence at 11am will be marked by the firing of a Royal Artillery gun, and wreaths will be laid by the Mayor, dignitaries, faith representatives and veterans' organisations. There will also be an opportunity during the service for anyone wishing to lay a wreath to come forward.
The Bishop of Bradwell, the Right Reverend Adam Atkinson, will lead the service with hymns and music by the Southend Citadel Band of the Salvation Army. The service will conclude with the National Anthem and the parade will then reform and march past the saluting dais, between the Cenotaph & Prittlewell Square, to close the morning's commemorations.
On Armistice Day (Monday 11 November) the Mayor will lead the City in the national two-minute silence at 11am at Victoria Circus, where residents are invited to gather in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service.
The Worshipful the Mayor, Cllr Ron Woodley, said: “Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are among the most significant days in our civic calendar. These solemn services pay tribute to those who gave their today for our tomorrow. They remind us of the cost of war and the importance of peace. I encourage everyone to join us in reflection on Sunday and Monday to honour the sacrifices made in service to others.”
Road closures will be in effect around the Cenotaph area on Sunday to accommodate the parade and service, with clear signage and parking restrictions in place.
