One Day - Holocaust Memorial Day
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council asks Southend-on-Sea to join us for our annual service of commemoration to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
We will once again come together to remember, the victims and those affected by the Jewish Holocaust, and to learn in the hope that there may be One Day in the future with no genocide.
The commemoration service will take place on Wednesday 26 January at 18:00 at Southend Civic Centre, Victoria Avenue, Southend, SS2 6ER. The service will also be available to watch online from Thursday 27 January. The service is set to include music, reflections, a presentation from Westcliff High School for Boys, poetry and an address by Mr Bernie Graham.
On Thursday 27 January at 12:00 noon, The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Cllr Margaret Borton, along with the Jewish community, will plant a tree at the junction of Carnarvon Road and Victoria Avenue, SS2 6LR, in memory of those who perished in the Nazi death camps and other genocides across the world.
Exhibitions of work which is dedicated to the unique stories of children during the Holocaust, is currently being displayed at the Forum until Tuesday 25 January. Then will be moved to the Civic Centre on the Wednesday 26 January for the commemoration service.
Cllr Ian Gilbert, leader of the council, said: “It is vital we remember the past in order to safeguard our future. Holocaust Memorial Day is an important nationally recognised day to honour all the victims and those who have suffered because of genocide.
“This year, we want to just that and put aside our differences and come together hoping that One Day, we can have a future with no genocide and further tragedies.
“We hope to see many of you at the services and exhibitions, and we look forward to welcoming our special guests.”
Attendance at all services listed above is free of charge, with no booking required.
