June 17, 2018 by Katie Lawrence

The Summer Holidays are nearly here! Our little fishing town is bursting with events, stunning views and historical sites. With only 6 weeks to go, we thought we’d help you all out a little by giving you a few ideas of what to do and to tell you what’s going on.

Music-a-leigh 29th July

Our local choirs will kick off the start of the summer Holidays with a day filled with music. Acts include the Salvation Army, 4&20 Blackbirds, Hoy Shanty Crew, Funky Voices, Bobs Barbershop Boys, LOMVC and Southend Vox. On Sunday the 29th July, from 11am to 4pm, they will be performing at Strand Wharf in Old Leigh. It is a free event, family friendly and is a really nice way to spend a Sunday in the sun.

Hadleigh Castle

It’s the perfect place for beautiful views, the kids to run wild and a picnic in the sun. It is only a 30 minute walk away from Leigh Train Station and can be accessed by car. Choose from watching the sunset, exploring Hadleigh country park or even petting the animals at the farm which is just next to the castle. The 13th century castle ruins can be visited at any time, night and day, for free!

Leigh Farmer’s Market

If you love local food and produce, this is the perfect for you. Open every third Friday of the month till November, you can enjoy the fresh food, homemade gifts, and even treat your dog to a vegan treat! Treat family, friends or yourself to the handmade soaps and natural skin products, there is so much to see that it would be a mistake to miss this! With only six events left, make sure you head down between 9am to 1pm to Leigh Community Centre and see what they have to offer!

Belfairs

Belfairs has so much to offer; pick from horse riding, golf, exploring the woods or visiting their restaurant. You can play golf and ride the horses as often as you like without having to be a member, allowing you to spend the day there as you wish! The woods are perfect for dog walking, cycling or simply exploring! It’s perfect for the kids as there is a park situated near the restaurant.

A bite to eat at the end of the pier

Yes it may not be in Leigh, but none of us go enough! To walk to the end and back is only £2 and is a great way to spend a Saturday morning. There is a Laurel & Hardy pop up shop at the end in a beach hut, open till the 2nd of September, selling a variety of merchandise. Enjoy a warm cup of tea at the Salt Café, with fantastic views and a great shot of the Southend sea front.

A dip in the sea

Leigh’s beach is great for family and friends, it’s popular and a great atmosphere for the kids. With ice-cream, chips and burgers only 100 yards away, it’s a great, buzzing spot to be at the weekend. We advise you get there early, as its very popular and a lot of fun! But if you prefer somewhere a little quieter, keep heading towards Southend to find a perfect spot.

Leigh Heritage Centre

The Leigh Heritage Trail is around a 60 minute walk, 1.8 miles long and is an interesting historical day out right on our door step! You may be surprised by some of the things you see. Leigh Heritage Centre. The map is accessible from Google maps.
