93% of pupils get top three secondary school place

Nearly eight out of ten Southend-on-Sea children will start secondary school in September 2016 at their first choice school.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has released the data on secondary school allocations as part of ‘National Offer Day’ on 1st March 2016, when parents and pupils receive confirmation.

Out of 1889 applications made, 93% received one of their top three preferences, the same figure as last year.

Cllr Anne Jones, Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, says:

“I am pleased that 79% of applicants received offers for their first preference and 93% one of their top three. We make every effort to ensure that children of secondary school age and applied are offered a place.

“Secondary applications are increasing all the time (58 additional applications this year), but despite this the number of children gaining one of their preferences increased by 57 which emphasises the hard work that our school admissions team do. This is an increase of 89 pupils gaining one of the top three preferences over the last three years.

“As ever, and whilst the majority of people have got what they wanted, we of course recognise that there will be disappointed families who did not receive either their first choice or who did not receive any of their top three. That is why we continue to work hard on plans to increase the number of pupil places available locally and recently committed an additional £8m to increase the number of secondary school places, improve facilities available and help to ensure that there are sufficient places offering good quality and choice to our young people and their parents and carers.”
