‘Be Safe’ roadshow draws in the crowds
Families flocked to the seaside to meet the emergency services of land and sea at a free fun-day event to promote safety.
Organised by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, it was the first ‘Be Safe’ event to be held and it gave families the chance to find out more about the emergency services and learn potentially life-saving information to help keep their loved ones safe, at home or out-and-about.
Some families stumbled across the event on Wednesday 29 May by chance, having planned to visit the seaside anyway. While others had seen it advertised on social media and made the trip especially.
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mark Flewitt opened the event and said: “It gives me great pleasure to come here today and see first-hand the big picture and meet all the services who work so hard to keep us all safe.
“The more serious side of this event is that we are a seaside town, living beside an estuary which is made up of water and tides, and if it’s not used properly and respected, can cause real serious issues. I’m really impressed with all the organisations who have taken part in the event and it seems everyone who has attended has really enjoyed themselves.”
Organisations attending include Southend RNLI, Essex County Fire and Rescue, Essex Police, Southend Coastguard, the Environment Agency, SAVS, Anglian Water and 4X4 Rover Rescue. Plus the Street Pastors, Southend Community Partnership Team, Stop Smoking, Health 4 Life, Southend Sparkle, the school nursing team and the council’s road safety team.
The free event took place on Wednesday 29 May, on City Beach, near to the fountains on Southend-on-Sea beach front, between 10am and 3pm.
