Belfairs Oaks to be taken down due to roots encroaching large gas main

February 26, 2025

The Southend Parks Team have issued advance warning of the felling of Oak Trees in Belfairs Park due to roots encroaching upon large gas main.

From Monday 3rd March forestry operations begin at Belfairs park. This will take place from the Poors Lane entrance (white gate) along the trotting track to the entrance at Woodlands Path. This will then continue from Woodlands Path up towards the Woodland centre.

Sections of the trotting track will be closed off during this work to keep park visitors safe. This work will be carried out by contractors working on behalf of the Cadent gas company. The reason for the work is to remove some Oak trees, the roots of which are beginning to encroach upon a large gas main. Surveyors will be on hand during the works to ensure that the crowns of the trees are clear of nesting birds before they are felled. This felled timber will be used by the Catchment to Coast team for their leaky dams project.
