Budding young gardeners to make Southend a greener place!

Tuesday 2nd December 2014

Local school children will be planting hundreds of trees as part of National Tree Week.

Two classes of Year 5 pupils from Blenheim School will be donning their garden gloves and planting around 400 trees in Blenheim Park on Wednesday 3rd December from 10.00am to 11.30.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council‘s Park Wardens and Tree Officers will be on hand to help and talk about how plants grow and how important trees and nature are to people. They will also talk about Biodiversity being the variety of life on earth, and about how plants provide for Bees, Birds, Butterflies, insects, and many other animals.

National Tree Week is a long running campaign started in 1975 by The Tree Council. It celebrates the beauty of our environment and the essential part that trees play in making that environment. Southend-on-Sea Borough Council recognises the importance of trees in our town and plants new trees along the roads and in our parks every winter.

Residents are also reminded that the Council run a Donate a Tree scheme, where they can buy a tree to be planted in one of the many award winning parks and open spaces in Southend. More details can be found at www.southend.gov.uk/donateatree or by calling 01702 215011.

Graham Longley, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development said: “It’s great for the younger generation to be involved in making Southend a greener place. This is also an ideal opportunity to remind residents that there is a very successful Donate a Tree scheme run by the Council where they can pay for a tree or be planted in one of Southend’s many award winning parks and open spaces. ”
