Charity Marathon to return to Chelmsford for its sixth year
In October, an Essex-wide Hospice Charity will be bringing their Marathon back to Chelmsford.
The J’s Hospice’s Chelmsford Marathon is returning to the city for its sixth successful year on Sunday 20th October, raising vital funds for The J’s Hospice, the only charity in Essex that supports young adults with life-limiting conditions and their families in their own homes and in the community.
Event organisers from The J’s are hoping over 800 runners will join them for the 26.2-mile route that will take them from the start line at Shire Hall on the High Street through the countryside and pretty villages of Essex and across the finish line in Central Park.
Over the past five years the Chelmsford Marathon has begun to be more widely recognised in the running world and last year’s event attracted athletes from as far afield as Dorset, Lancashire, Pembrokeshire and Yorkshire as well as China, Taiwan and South Africa.
This year also sees the very first Chelmsford 3K Family Fun Run through Central Park which is open to all ages and abilities; the route is accessible for dogs, prams and wheelchair users and every participant will receive a medal as they cross the finish line.
Matthew Rickett took part in last year’s event, he said “It was a lovely marathon. The marshals were very enthusiastic and there was a great community spirit from people standing outside their homes cheering us on as well as a great team spirit between the runners. The countryside was beautiful, and the stunning scenery helped the miles to fly by. I would definitely recommend the Chelmsford Marathon to other runners.”
Professional services firm, Aon has kindly agreed to sponsor this event for the second year. Last year some of the Aon’s employees took part including James Foot and Lewis Patching. James explained “It was our first Chelmsford Marathon and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was a well-run event and the marshals were amazing. We would absolutely recommend it. Our company, Aon, sponsored the Chelmsford Marathon and The J’s Hospice is a fantastic local charity to support.”
The charity, part of Havens Hospices which also includes Little Havens Hospice and Fair Havens Hospice, must raise over £19,000 every week to be there for every young person who needs their care. The money raised by runners at this year’s marathon and 3K Family Fun Run will help them continue ‘Making every day count’ for as long as they are needed.
Online registration is now open for both Chelmsford Marathon and the Family Fun Run; to take advantage of Early Bird prices sign up before 6th May 2019 - www.havenshospices.org.uk/chelmsfordmarathon or for more information please contact Cathryn Wood on 01702 220337 or email cjwood@havenshospices.org.uk
