Code Club arrives at Westcliff Library
Code Club arrives at Westcliff Library
Monday 10th October 2016
Westcliff Library on London Road will be hosting a new after school club for children aged 9 – 11 years old starting on Wednesday 12th October at 4.30pm.
‘Code Club’ aims to provide children with the skills, confidence and knowledge to change their world through fun and engaging computer coding projects. They believe all children should have the opportunity to learn to code, no matter their circumstances.
Currently there are over six thousand code clubs across eighty countries and their club projects have been translated into fifteen languages. Libraries are in an ideal position to support the project by providing venues in the local community. The Westcliff Library Code Club will be the first public one in Southend-on-Sea.
Volunteer-led, the children taking part can learn a variety of coding languages such as Scratch, HTML & CSS and Python. Westcliff Library will initially be focusing on Scratch but, having just received 8 BBC micro:bits and with plans to also introduce Raspberry Pi’s, this is just the beginning!
All Code Club volunteers receive training and DBS checks and Westcliff library has their own fantastic Code Club Volunteer, along with the help of library staff, waiting to introduce young people into the exciting world of coding through projects.
The projects are easy to follow step-by-step guides which help children learn Scratch, HTML & CSS and Python by making games, animations, and websites. The projects gradually introduce coding concepts to allow children to build their knowledge incrementally.
Councillor Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and The Economy said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn a transferable skill in a fun and creative way.
“Enabling them to build their ideas with the help of volunteers and library staff, I hope it provides inspiration for the next generation of digital creators.”
Places at the Club are limited and must be booked – please contact Toby Evans for more information and to make a booking for your child by emailing: tobyevans@southend.gov.uk.
For further information about Code Club please see their website
