The Donald has landed!

The Donald has landed!

Last Wednesday morning, I woke up to the news that the United States of America has voted in a reality T.V star as their 45th president.

I am hoping that this doesn’t give Alan Sugar any ideas or somebody from TOWIE thoughts that they could do something similar and try out to be our next Prime Minister.

I haven’t followed the US election in finite detail but I have kept my eye on it and watched the coverage on the news. From an outsider looking in it seems beyond belief that this chap who appears to be a bit of a lout has managed to go all the way. I bet even with an ego the size of his he didn’t really believe 18 months ago when he first threw his hat in the ring that he would actually win!

I think it is more a reflection of where we are in the world in relation to the general disenchanted feeling with the establishment and a representation of the media propelling characters, however flawed, in to the limelight. The idea of politicians as celebrities is bizarre. They are supposed to be our representatives, able to put across the electorates views and opinions, and what suit they wear or the haircut they sport should be completely irrelevant.

The problem with this thinking is exactly the same as we are currently experiencing with Brexit. It is all very well using your vote to stick one up the establishment. There is nothing wrong with a bit of a revolution and from time to time our MP’s always need reminding that they work for us. But there has to be a plan behind it.

The people here voted for us to leave the EU and in the US they have voted for the non-politician, anti establishment Donald Trump to be their next President. The real test will be what happens now.

In our scenario it will be about actually leaving the EU, if the courts and the MP’s allow it, then it will be about a trade deal with the rest of the EU and then it will be about controlling immigration. These were the main points that people voted on and the people have spoken but nobody really seems to know the details of how they will go about doing any of it. And as ever markets (housing included) do not like uncertainty.

In the US they have voted for the outsider. He has promised to ban Muslim Immigrants, lock up the other candidate and of course build a dirty great wall on the Mexican border. Will any of this actually get done? Does anybody actually believe it will get done or are they just fed up with the politically correct establishment figures never giving a straight answer to a straight question?

In essence all we really want to know is how it will effect us? With the Donald we will have to see if the so-called special relationship still exists (if it ever really did) and we are able to negotiate a decent trade agreement with the US? With the EU it is difficult to know how it will affect us yet as nothing has been discussed (officially!). That is the problem though, this period which could and probably will go on for a couple of years will mean that people, banks, national builders and everybody involved in the housing market will not really know where we are going to be in 2,3,4 or 5 years time. I am sure that the picture will not be drastically different from where we are now but any nervousness or uncertainty leads to people holding back plans and the whole market grinds to a halt.

I am sure though that our little bubble in Leigh on Sea will continue to be one of the most popular areas to live in the country and people will be more concerned about what school catchment area they are in or how close they are to the seafront than who is the president of the USA.
