ECO CHIC GREEN FOR 2015

At this time of year chances are you are either thinking of joining a gym or having taken the Christmas decorations down, redecorating your home. We’ve even had a makeover at GDUKStyle as we’re now EcoChic Interiors! The new website will be fully active by 12 January and to make it even more exciting we’re opening one new website page a day during the first week of January!

Back to the subject of redecorating - due to a severe roof leak at my home a while ago, a major scheme of refurbishment begins in January. I’ve chosen environmentally friendly paint by Ecos Organic Paints, its great to use with virtually no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). There’ll also be lots of upcycling, eco sensible materials used and vintage and retro accessories too, so it will truly be an eco chic project.

Achieving an eco friendly environment at home is not as complicated as you might think but there are a few basic rules that will help you. Whether buying in store or online, look for data on the website or a logo on the tins which tells you the VOC level category the paint falls into - go for low VOC or better still zero VOC paint especially if any of the residents are children, have respiratory conditions or are pregnant. Have a look at the following websites which all sell environmentally friendly paints: ecosorganicpaints.co.uk, auro.co.uk, earthbornpaints.co.uk and nurserypaint.co.uk. Lighting is another area for consideration - low energy lighting is more economical than using incandescent bulbs however make sure you’re aware of how to dispose of them safely as well as what to do if one breaks. They do contain small amounts of mercury and there are certain things to keep in mind if one is damaged including ventilating the room, not vacuuming up the pieces and not putting them into a refuse bin but rather taking them to a recycling centre. We cover this and many other points regarding eco decorating, including upcycling, furniture, flooring and lighting choices, during our EcoChicYourHome workshops so do get in touch if you would like to attend our next class in the Leigh on sea area.

Happy New Year everyone and happy redecorating – whatever colour paint you choose, make it green for 2015!
