Foulness Bike Ride Returns on Sunday 21st July 2024
The Rotary International Foulness Bike Ride is back this year so book your place for Sunday 21st July 2024.
This annual race takes place around the Island of Foulness. For many years Foulness was controlled by the military, and used as a proving ground for munitions. In 2003, QinetiQ was awarded a contract to conduct this work and although the Ministry of Defence still owns of the island, access is controlled through QinetiQ.
Large areas of the island are farmed and there is a long established and close-knit community. In earlier times, however, things were very different. Evidence exists to show that there was once a Romano British settlement here. Much later the area was a notorious smuggling centre.
Thankfully for cyclists the route around the Island is mostly flat with a long incline on the way home. The course is good for any cyclist whether experienced or inexperienced and participants are welcome on push bikes, electric bikes, three wheelers and unicycles. Of course you will have to factor in the wind as it can be very windy out on the marshes.
The Foulness Heritage Centre will be open on the day for refreshments, snacks and mouth watering cakes.
Online registration will close at 6pm on Saturday 20th July 2024 with start times being allocated on a first come basis (9.30 onwards). Advance online registration prices are Adult £25, Child £15, Family £65 (2 Adults + 2 Children). Subject to available space you can book on the day between 9.45 and 12.00 Adult £30 and child £15.
The route is approximately 11 miles to Churchend and back, each loop is approximately 4 miles. Most riders aim to do 3 loops making a total of 23 miles but it is the rider's choice. As the Island needs to be clear by 4pm the loop from Churchend closes at 1.30pm. All riders must wear a cycle helmet.
This event is a great way to see an Island not normally open to the public with its windswept terrain, old cottages, wildlife and marshes. A great day out for all the family.
