A Ronnie Scott Jazz player is just one of the musicians to play at Southends FREE music concert

September 2, 2014 by Joanna Harrison

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is launching a new series of lunchtime recitals in the Civic Centre’s Council Chamber, given by talented local and London based musicians.

The first recital will take place on Wednesday 10th September from 12.15-1pm, when the unusual duo of 2 accordionists will perform a wide and varied programme.

Local musician Tony Compton will be joined by his fellow accordionist Jack Emblow in a 45 minute programme of light, jazz and classical music to suit all tastes.

Tony has performed across the world in his career, specialising in jazz performances in prestigious venues including London’s Ronnie Scotts. Over the last five decades any music heard on radio, television and films where an accordion was featured was most likely played by Jack Emblow. Jack accompanied the Cliff Adams singers on Radio 2, Sing Something Simple, for 43 years. He also did the background music to Last of the Summer Wine, Bergerac, 'Allo 'Allo and Maigret, to name but a few.

The series of free recitals continues monthly, with the next concert taking place on Wednesday 15th October, when Samantha Ward will perform a solo piano concert.

Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism & Economic Development, Councillor Graham Longley said: “These lunchtime recitals offers residents, visitors and local business people a great opportunity to see top class musicians play for free, without even having to travel out of the Borough. If you have not been to one, why not come along and give it a try?

There is no need to book, just turn up and enjoy.”
