Grand Hotel Plans Delayed Until New Year

Further delays to the Grand’s renovation have left owner Mick Norcross frustrated at the council officers dithering over it’s future.

The planning application of the Broadway Hotel will not go before Southend Council’s development and control committee until January, meaning a two month further delay to proceedings.

Norcross, 53, added “they are asking for an extension of time to consider all the factors that are in font of them and there is nothing that we can do about it. […] I have been working for a year to get this planning together. I purchased it in January and I want to start to do what’s necessary to stop the building from falling into a further state of disrepair. […] I would have hoped that having missed November it would go in December, but obviously it isn’t going to be the case.”

A spokesman for Southend Council said officers were working “as quickly as possible” and had agreed the extension with planning agents Smart Planning. He said “This is in order that all the complex elements of the planning application can be fully assessed, including detailed calculations on the financial viability of the development. […] We hope to be in a position to make a decision on the application in January.”
