Indirock Supporting Vulnerable Young People Into Work

September 18, 2024

At Indirock, we believe in the power of bouldering to create positive change—not just for individuals, but for the community as a whole. After two and a half years of being open, we took a look at the impact we have made. We set out with three core goals, and we’re proud to see measurable progress in each area:

1. Making Bouldering Accessible to All: We work hard to ensure Indirock is inclusive—physically, psychologically, and financially. We have partnered with charities like SEND the Right Message, Trust Links, Southend on Sea Rape Crisis, and more, offering climbing courses for SEND children and refugees through Welcome to the UK. This autumn, with funding from the National Lottery Million Hours Fund, we’re launching a programme to reduce antisocial behaviour in Southend. Over 18 months, we’ll provide 3,800 hours of youth work through supervised climbing sessions for 11-18 year- olds, ensuring they never climb hungry with café vouchers for each visit.

2. Reviving Southend’s City Centre: We’re proud to contribute to the revival of our high street. Located in a shopping centre, Indirock has brought new foot traffic to the area. With support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we purchased a mobile climbing wall (one of the only ones in the country!) to bring bouldering to community events, offering free climbing to all. We also prioritize sourcing from local businesses and celebrating their work.

3. Supporting Vulnerable Young People Into Work: Our founder, Emily, co-founded the prison charity Finding Rhythms, where she saw the need for employers to provide opportunities to vulnerable young people, not just rely on charity hand-outs. This inspired her to create Indirock as an employer that offers real opportunities, helping young people avoid crime. We have offered work experience to students from alternative schools like Sutton House Academy and YMCA Community School, young adults with Active Essex Foundation, those on probation with Forward Trust, and neurodivergent individuals through SEND the Right Message.

At Indirock, we believe climbing can be a powerful tool for transformation and are committed to creating lasting positive change in Southend.
