Leigh Cliffs ecological work moves a step closer to completion

Ecological work to safely move a badger sett located at Leigh Cliffs has progressed after the council were granted the necessary permit by Natural England earlier this month.

The permit means that officers were allowed to enter the site at Leigh Cliffs to cut the vegetation and allow ecologists, who are arriving next week, to lay mesh and install gates in preparation for encouraging the badgers to move safely on.

This latest work is a big step forward in order to allow the reconstruction of Cliff Parade to continue as soon as possible. Until the badgers have moved on, the council cannot carry out the necessary repairs to the road and pavement because the area is on top of the badger sett.

Cllr Meg Davidson, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: “The road has had a lane closure for some time due to the undermining caused by the badgers, which is understandably frustrating for residents and road users.

“Logistically it’s one of the most challenging places the badgers could have settled due to the steepness of the slope and proximity to the pavement and road. But as soon as we have safely moved the badgers on, we can begin reconstruction on Cliff Parade.

“Public safety is our number one priority and until we can stabilise the road and pavement ensuring it is safe, the closure will have to remain in place. We apologise for any inconvenience and updates will be provided on the council’s social media accounts.”
