Meet The Green-Minded Youngsters From Eastwood
Meet the green-minded youngsters from Eastwood
Thursday 12th March 2015
Children from Eastwood Primary School and Nursery leapt to meet the challenge of cutting down waste at school and home – and documented their success.
They kept diary details of what they recycled as part of a special Zero Waste Week initiative.
The aim was to recycle absolutely everything possible to cut down the amount of waste going into black sacks and then into landfill – at great cost to the environment and the Council.
Fully informed on what could be recycled, the children made every effort to recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, cans and tins in the pink sacks and to recycle any food waste at home in the blue food waste bins.
Finally any remaining non-recyclable waste was disposed of in black sacks.
Rebecca Perman, Headteacher at Eastwood Primary School and Nursery in Rayleigh Road, Leigh said: “As a school we’ve always tried to teach our pupils about the importance of recycling and conserving natural resources. Zero Waste Week has helped inject new energy into this subject and the children, as well as the teachers, have really enjoyed the challenge.”
Martin Terry, Executive Councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, added: “It’s great to see young people getting involved in important matters like recycling.
“Through the Zero Waste Week initiative, we wanted to try to inspire people to recycle even more and reduce the amount of waste they put in their black sacks. I would like to thank everyone who took part in this challenge
“Last year almost 30,000 tonnes of waste from the black sacks was sent to landfill, costing the council more than £3 million.
“This comes directly out of our revenue so any savings that we can make on this could go straight back into other front line services, helping to reduce the burden on local taxpayers and help us to deal with the on-going central Government cuts that we face.”
