New penguin ‘Sunny’ set to make a splash at next year's art trail

December 5, 2024

Essex artist Neil Fendell has revealed his penguin for next year’s spectacular summer art trail – Waddle-on-Sea!

‘Sunny Southpole-on-Sea’, the ‘cool’ new star of Waddle-on-Sea, was selected from a range of submissions by Havens Hospices as the promotional penguin for their latest art trail.

Neil’s new penguin will be making waves in the summer of 2025, following the success of his popular designs for Herd In The City, ‘Rock ‘n’ Glow’ and ‘Never Forget’.

Waddle-on-Sea – created by Havens Hospices and Wild in Art - will see 30 large penguin sculptures and some very special baby penguins dotted around the city, including Leigh-on-Sea, each sponsored by a local business and painted by a professional artist in varying styles.

Neil is an artist and designer whose work transports viewers to the cherished landscapes of his youth in a way that resonates deeply with audiences. His design, ‘Sunny Southpole-on-Sea’, is decorated with acrylic pens and spray paints and playfully transforms Southend-on-Sea into a magical icy wonderland.

Neil says, “My design shows familiar landmarks and attractions covered in sparkling snow and ice, creating a whimsical winter carnival. It's a delightful blend of seaside charm and Arctic fun, offering a fresh, entertaining perspective on our beloved city.”

Asked why he decided to get involved again with Herd In The City, Neil says, “It is an honour to be invited to participate in another art trail for Havens Hospices. I believe these public art events are a fantastic way to bring our community together.

“My artwork aims to bring joy and a sense of wonder, reflecting the warmth and care that Havens Hospices provides to the community.”

Vanessa Harvey, Project Manager for Havens Hospices, says, “It’s a pleasure to have Neil back on board again supporting our next art trail, Waddle-on-Sea. Everyone loved his designs last year, so I’m sure ‘Sunny’ will prove to be a much-loved penguin on the trail in 2025.”

At the end of the trail, the penguins will be sold at auction, raising money for Havens Hospices. This follows the success of the charity’s ‘Hares About Town’ trail in 2021 and Herd In The City in 2023, which have raised more than £1 million for local hospice care.
