New security initiatives introduced in Old Town, Leigh-on-Sea
Several security initiatives are being introduced to the Old Town area of Leigh-on-Sea to heighten security and safety in the area.
A new frontline security base will be up and running from this Saturday (13 March) located inside the Leigh Heritage Centre.
The centre will be used as a base for Community Safety Officers who will provide a patrolling presence and seek to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime by providing reassurance, assistance and help in order to create a safer, more pleasant environment.
Other council departments and partners, including the police, will also be invited to use the base to enhance the overall visible presence in the area.
Two temporary CCTV cameras have been installed to help monitor the area and they are positioned at Bell Wharf and the bottom of Belton Bridge. Plans are also underway to install three new permanent CCTV cameras.
Cllr Martin Terry, cabinet member for community safety and customer contact, said: “The introduction of the security base and the presence of Community Safety Officers should be a welcome and reassuring sight for residents and visitors to the area.
“We also have two temporary CCTV cameras located at Bell Wharf and Belton Bridge to help us monitor the area and plans to install three new permanent CCTV cameras are also progressing – we’re looking to complete the procurement process and agree the programme of works in the coming weeks. Southend-on-Sea Borough Council was an early adopter of CCTV, and as such we have exceptionally comprehensive CCTV coverage across the Borough and these new cameras will add to that.
“The Old Town is a very popular and growing area for the local economy but recent tragic events and other anti-social behaviour in the area have naturally caused concern amongst residents and visitors. The introduction of these security measures will ensure everyone who visits the area feel safe and reassured.”
