Register to vote for local elections and have your say

April 14, 2021

Residents of Southend-on-Sea need to make sure they register to vote by midnight on Monday 19 April so they can vote in the local elections this May.

By registering to vote, residents can have their say on important issues that affect lives locally. Registering to vote is quick and easy, and takes just five minutes to complete online at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

In addition, the deadline to apply to vote by post or amend an existing postal or proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday 20 April and the deadline for applying to vote by proxy is 5pm on 27 April.

This year residents voting in person can expect some changes at polling stations as the election team have worked hard to ensure polling stations are COVID-secure and that residents can vote safely. Measures include, hand sanitiser, one-way systems, perspex screens and due to social distancing residents may need to queue outside their polling station. All staff will wear face coverings and we ask that voters also wear a face covering unless exempt.

Alison Griffin, chief executive and returning officer said: “Registering to vote is an important way of being able to have your say and shape policies that will impact people in Southend-on-Sea.

“Our staff are working hard to prepare for the election, get people registered to vote, and ensure polling stations are COVID-secure for polling staff and residents to vote safely in person.”

People can find out if they have registered to vote by calling 01702 215010 or emailing: registrationandelections@southend.gov.uk
