Shoebury Common North is set for £300,000 of improvements. The proposals form part of the draft budget for 2018/19 which will be discussed by the council’s cabinet next week (Thursday 18 January).

The works, which have been planned following public outreach sessions held in 2016, would include a new children’s play area, paths, furniture and fitness equipment, plus new landscaping and replanting and improvement works to the existing car park and entrance.

Cllr Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and the Economy, said: “We have had a long-held ambition to realise the potential of this part of the seafront, which has some of the finest Blue Flag beaches in the Borough and boasts commanding views of the estuary.

“That’s why, back in 2016, we asked local people and businesses how we could make more of Shoebury Common North so that it was a more attractive destination for residents and businesses alike.

“We listened to what people said and are now proposing making it more family-friendly, with attractive landscaping and a new children’s play area.

“Last year, over 100,000 people visited the Poppies: Wave sculpture at Barge Pier in Shoeburyness, opening this part of our Borough to a new audience that we want to keep coming back.

“We believe that investing in Shoebury Common North will build on that success and make much better use of what is currently an underused green space. We are confident it will become a popular attraction for local families, beach visitors and beach hut-users alike.”
