Southend goes purple for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

Wednesday 28th October 2015

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will be supporting November’s Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month by participating in the Purple Lights for Hope campaign.

Purple Lights for Hope is a national campaign by charity Pancreatic Cancer UK, which aims to put a spotlight on pancreatic cancer and highlight a disease many people know little about.

Lights on City Beach and the spiral staircase of the Civic Centre are being ‘switched to purple’ for the first week of November for the campaign.

Pancreatic cancer can often be difficult to diagnose and some symptoms listed below can also be a sign of more common illnesses. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, then it is advisable to book an appointment with your GP:

  • persistent unexplained abdominal pain
  • jaundice
  • weight loss
  • bowel problems
  • nausea and vomiting
  • indigestion/heartburn
  • fever and shivering

Purple Lights for Hope presents an opportunity to celebrate the lives of loved ones dealing with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis and to remember those who have sadly died of the disease, whilst also spreading a message of hope.

Cllr James Moyies, Executive Councillor for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “We are pleased to be promoting Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and playing a part in the Purple Lights for Hope campaign. I hope that other businesses and venues across the Borough are also able to take part and turn purple this November.

“If any of our residents are concerned about any symptoms they may be suffering, I would encourage them to make an appointment with their GP.”
