Southend Half Marathon returns this summer
Southend’s premier running event - which raises thousands of pounds for Havens Hospices - is set to return to the seafront this summer.
Registration is now open for the Southend Half Marathon, sponsored by Utilize Plc, taking place on Sunday 9th June 2024. The 13.1 mile course starts and finishes at East Beach, Shoeburyness.
The course is fast, flat and traffic-free making it ideal for first-time half marathon runners as well as a favourite for seasoned runners looking to achieve a personal best.
Every person who registers will be supporting Havens Hospices which includes Fair Havens and Little Havens. The local charity, which must raise more than £124,000 a week, cares for local children, young people and adults living with incurable conditions, helping them to make the most of every day.
Its free specialist care and support is there for families as long as it’s needed but can only continue thanks to people’s kind donations and sponsorship, such as those raised through events like the Southend Half Marathon.
Last year’s event raised close to £100,000 and the charity hopes even more funds can be raised next year at its flagship event with its new ‘Havens Hero’ ticket option. This ticket includes a donation to cover the cost of half an hour of care at either hospice for a patient.
Lucy Lock, organiser of the event at Havens Hospices said: “The Southend Half Marathon is the city’s biggest running event which sees over a thousand people year on year, including people from across the country and overseas, come together to enjoy a fast and flat route, all while raising funds for a vital local cause, close to the hearts of many in our community.
“There’s no better way to start the new year than by grabbing your running shoes and getting active in preparation. Whether you’re running for fun, to remember a loved one or to achieve a personal best, every mile will be making such a difference to all the families we care for.
“The demand for our care is ever-increasing, so we need 2024 to be our biggest and best fundraiser to date. Everyone living with a complex or incurable condition deserves the best possible care throughout their whole life’s journey and events like the Southend Half Marathon ensure this support and specialist care continues for everybody in our community.”
Every participant will receive a Southend Half Marathon 2024 medal to celebrate their achievement.
Advance online registration costs £34 for affiliated club runners and £36 for non-affiliated runners. Registration for wheelchair athletes costs £36.
