Southend Museums to celebrate 100 years of famous EKCO electrical company and they want your help
An exciting new exhibition will open at Central Museum this November to commemorate the upcoming centenary of the famous EKCO electrical company which was founded in 1926.
Southend Museums already holds the largest collection of EKCO-related objects, photographs, and memorabilia in the world, but they want Southend residents, past and present, to add to this archive by sharing their memories of the company.
Founded by Southend resident Eric Kirkham Cole, EKCO grew from a humble 1922 wireless business into an international brand producing everything from vital wartime technology to radio, television sets and domestic plastic products.
The EKCO factory was based in Prittlewell where the aptly named Ekco Park housing estate now stands, and it was the main employer in the city with up to 8,000 staff. Although no longer standing, it is still fondly remembered by past employees.
Cllr Carole Mulroney, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, culture and tourism, said: “Southend Museum’s curators would love to hear stories and memories from anyone with links to the EKCO company.
“If you or a relative or anyone you know has a story or memory of EKCO, then please do get in touch with Southend Museums to help the team build an oral history and bring to life the many artefacts that will be on display.”
To share your memories and be a part of the EKCO centenary celebration, email: museums@southend.gov.uk and you will be contacted with more information.
The EKCO exhibition opens on 26 November 2022 and will run for a year.
Visit www.southendmuseums.co.uk/ for more information on other event taking place across Southend Museums.
