Southend pier train back in action and voted No.1 Icon in Essex

April 1, 2025

Southend Pier’s railway train service is back in operation ahead of schedule following essential maintenance work that was expected to last until 4 April.

The return to service is thanks to the dedication and hard work of the engineering team, whose relentless efforts ensured the essential maintenance was completed swiftly and efficiently.

Cllr Matt Dent, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism, and Business, said: "The early return of the pier train service following essential maintenance is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the skill and dedication of our engineers who worked tirelessly to make this happen. We’re incredibly grateful for their efforts. This work will help ensure a smooth and reliable service for the busy summer season.”

Southend Pier and Railway has also been voted the number one icon in Essex for 2025, leading Visit Essex’s “Top 50 Icons of Essex” list.

This accolade follows a public vote earlier this year, with over 1,600 Essex residents nominating more than 200 locations across the county.

The recognition highlights the pier and railway’s significance not only as a cherished local landmark but also as a defining symbol of Essex, surpassing destinations such as Colchester Zoo, RHS Hyde Hall, and Hedingham Castle.

Other Southend attractions featured in the list include Adventure Island and the Cliffs Pavilion, which is currently undergoing an £8 million improvement programme.

This latest accolade follows Southend Pier receiving the prestigious UK National Piers Society 'Pier of the Year' award in 2023.

Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism, and business, said: "Southend Pier and Railway holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike.

“This latest recognition, following the Pier of the Year award in 2023, is a testament to Southend Pier’s enduring appeal and the civic pride it instils in our community. It’s a place of history, beauty, and enjoyment, drawing visitors not just from Essex, but from across the world.

“We are committed to ensuring it remains a top destination for generations to come."

With Easter fast approaching, there’s no better time to visit the pier and experience its charm first-hand. Families can participate in the Dino Egg Hunt from 5 to 21 April, while the Jurassic Pier event from 18 to 20 April will bring prehistoric fun to the seafront.

These events kick off an exciting year ahead, with the Great Pier Walk returning on 18 May and Waverley paddle steamer sailings in September and October.

Southend Pier Railway is a 3 ft narrow gauge railway that runs for 1.25 miles along the length of Southend Pier, providing passenger transport from the shore to the pier head.

The train times are as follows:

From the shore: On the hour and half hour

From the pier head: Quarter to and past the hour
