Southend schools celebrate high performance
Southend-on-Sea’s schoolchildren have achieved above the national average in all key stage performance results.
The excellent results places Southend in the top 25% local authorities in England for early years, key stage 2 and key stage 4. Out of 152 local authorities Southend placed 10th for achieving strong English and Maths passes in key stage 4 and 32nd for key stage 2 students achieving the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.
Despite outcomes for key stage 1 dropping, the expected standard performance is still above or meeting the national average with 76% for reading, 84% for science, 70% for writing and 76% for maths locally, compared to 75%, 83%, 70% and 76% nationally.
The figures are outlined in the annual education report which will be noted by cabinet today (Tuesday 12 March).
Cllr Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “It is fantastic to see that our young people are achieving such good results against the national picture, even in areas where there has been a slight drop from our 2017 performance.
“I was particularly pleased to see that the average point score measurement for early years learning, places us in the top 20 of all local authorities, as this shows we are giving the right support to our children at the very start of their education and that should stand them in good stead for school and the learning environment.
“I was also pleased to find we are the 9th placed local authority for having students with grades AAB at A-Level or key stage 5, as again this shows we are providing our young people with the educational skills to head off to higher education or the workforce with confidence.
“Education from start to finish in Southend continues to both improve and outperform against national benchmarks. The council works closely with schools and other providers through the Southend Education Board, where we are all able to work together to continue to improve the education we provide the adults of the future. Well done to all involved.”
