Squatters take over Southend town centre bar

Squatters have broken into and taken over what was formally Clarence Yard bar in Southend, just days after the Stockvale Group announced that they had acquired it.

The squatters moved in last week, plastering the windows with signs, claiming their right to be there and have since citied section 144 of Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 which made an offence of squatting in a residential building. Squatters can however be evicited if the leaseholder proves they are an intended occupier being blocked by trespassers.

The Stockvale Group, who also own popular attraction Adventure Island, purchased Clarence Yard after is was put on the market last year at a cost of £1million. The property is set to go under an internal refurb, though no set date or plans have been released.

The Stockvale Group have a proven record of supporting homeless charities and are currently working with the local authorities to deal with the squatters as quickly and as senstively as possible.
