Temporary changes to governing body at primary school

February 1, 2023

A temporary change to the governing body at Heycroft Primary School in Southend-on-Sea, has been introduced following concerns over governance.

The issues raised by Southend-on-Sea City Council did not relate to the education of the children at the school, but the way in which the school was being managed.

Following repeat warnings and expert advice given, a formal warning was issued on Thursday 19 January 2023 asking governors to submit a rapid improvement plan.

On Friday 23 January 2023 the entire governing body issued formal resignation letters to the council.

Cllr Laurie Burton, cabinet member for children and learning, said: “It is disappointing that the governing body felt the need to resign, but I would like to thank them for their work and commitment to the school to date.”

“I want to reassure parents that the school, with the support of the Local Authority, continues to work closely to promote the best possible education and opportunities for all children.”

The council is now in the process of applying to the Department for Education to set up an Interim Executive Board (IEB). Members of the IEB will be chosen for the skills, knowledge, and experience, they will contribute towards the school’s overall strategic leadership and areas of priority that have been identified.

In the meantime, the school will be run by Mr Abel, the head of school and Mr Moore the executive headteacher.

Glenn Moore, the executive headteacher at Heycroft Primary School, added: “Our priority is the ongoing education of our children and making sure that their day-to-day life in the classroom is not disrupted in any way, by these changes.

“Parents have been informed of the situation and both the Head of School and myself, are available to answer any questions.”
