Time To Talk

March 20, 2019 by Dannielle Emery - Lifestyle Expert

The last week as been a weird one for me. Last week was the 1yr anniversary of my Dad’s death and I think it’s hit me more now than it did before. I feel so much more emotional. Then with the horrendous atrocities that happened in New Zealand and the passing of Mike Thalassitis I was a blubbering mess (and I never cry). So many lives lost and so much heartache out there for their loved ones.

The Love Island star’s death really shocked me, especially as it’s the 2nd reality TV star from the same show to take their life. How can someone who appears to have it all be that depressed to see no other option. But that’s it right there – ‘appears’. So many people are living with hardships, pressure,  depression, anxiety etc that we know nothing about as they ‘appear’ to be fine. And they may not wish to share that with everyone and that’s ok, but it has made me more aware of just how much people don’t talk to each other enough about how their really feeling. Especially men.

Why is that? Is it the stigma that still comes with mental health? Scared to appear weak? Afraid of judgement?

Whatever the reason, we all need to be much kinder to each other, all the time, not just at these difficult times.

Manners cost nothing and small acts of kindness can really go along way and you may just make someone’s day.

So check in with each other every now and again. If you’re struggling, open up to someone you feel safe to talk to, whether a friend, a colleague, family member or GP. Don’t suffer in silence. There are plenty of helplines out there for lots of different areas of mental health. It’s Time To Talk

There are plenty of things you can do to help make sure you keep yourself mentally healthy.

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Eat well
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking and drugs
  • Get plenty of sunlight
  • Manage stress
  • Activity and exercise
  • Do something you enjoy
  • Connect with others and be sociable
