Turn back time to learn about Southend at war

Tuesday 18th August 2015

A fascinating series of talks at Prittlewell Priory Museum this week will reveal Southend-on-Sea’s role in both the First and Second World Wars.

These free events in the refectory at the Priory in Priory Park, Victoria Avenue, Southend, run from 10am until 4pm from Wednesday 19th August until Saturday 22nd August, and 11am until 3:30pm on Sunday 23rd August.

They are timed to coincide with national commemorations for the 70th anniversary of VJ Day, and the 100th anniversary of the Landings at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli.

Graham Longley, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, said: “These talks given by history experts are an invaluable free opportunity to learn about the contribution of Southend people across the world.

“Some made the ultimate sacrifice and are forever remembered on the Roll of Honour.

“As national publicity is given to wartime anniversaries, it really brings the past alive to find out more about exactly how Southend people were involved in these key historical events.”

Talks about Southend during the wars take place at 11:30am on Wednesday to Sunday, followed by talks about the Roll of Honour and researching military history at 2:30pm.
