UK Power Network to carry out work at Leigh Marina

UK Power Network (UKPN) will be carrying out essential work on a new service connection for Leigh Marina from Tuesday 13 April to Friday 30 April, meaning multi-way traffic signals will be in place that will affect traffic flow and access to council services in the area.

With Leigh train station, Leigh Marshes household waste recycling centre (HWRC) and Two Tree Island all in the vicinity of where the UK Power Network essential work is taking place, the council is urging vehicle owners to try and avoid the area where possible to avoid a build-up of traffic in the area.

The works are essential and will see a new service connection put in place for Leigh Marina, which will increase power supply in the area. The work will involve installing a new cable from the transformer to the Marina for the new connection. The works are scheduled to run from Tuesday 13 April until Friday 30 April and will see three temporary sets of multi-way traffic lights in place on Leigh High Street, on the junction with the access road to Two Tree Island (map attached). The works will be carried out between the hours of 7am – 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Whilst the works are not being carried out by the council and are taking place on a private road, the amenities in the surrounding area are council-owned, meaning anyone planning on visiting the Leigh Marshes HWRC or Two Tree Island will likely face delays getting to these sites.

Daniel Colthorpe, UK Power Network street works performance manager, said: “The work being undertaken is essential work on a new service connection for Leigh Marina, which involves upgrading the transformer to increase supply and installing a new service to the Marina. We will look to minimise disruption as best we can and apologise for any inconvenience the work may cause.”

Steve Moore, executive director for neighbourhoods and environment, said: “These essential works are being carried out by UKPN to increase power supply in the area. We know this area is very busy for commuters, dog walkers, people visiting the Leigh driving range, and of course those planning on visiting the recycling centres.

“We have been in discussion with UKPN to see how this essential work can be carried out as quickly and safely as possible, and although the council does not have jurisdiction on this stretch of private road, UKPN have agreed to reopen the roads on weekends to reduce the risk of traffic build up in peak times.

“I would urge anyone planning on visiting Two Tree Island to consider the UKPN traffic management that will be in place before setting off, and those planning on visiting the HWRC to safely store their rubbish at home if possible, rather than visiting the site during the planned roadworks. If rubbish cannot be stored safely at home, please be aware there may be delays in getting to the site because of the roadworks. Please check the on-site webcam for vehicles queuing to access the site."
