Winter Fashion Over The Ages

The new exhibition at the Beecroft Art Gallery from Saturday 10th January shows how winter fashions have changed over the years.

The ‘Winter Warmers exhibition explores the production and design of winter clothing and accessories from 1890 onwards, looking at how winter fashion has changed over time and how technology has improved fabrics to better deal with extreme weather conditions.

One of the examples on show is a second world war Duffle coat that reached popularity during the 1950s and 60s and was popularised by Sir Bernard Montgomery, the co-founder of the SAS. To this day, this hardwearing and warm coat is still known as a ‘Monty’.

Graham Longley, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, said: “The latest exhibition at the Beecroft gives residents and visitors a chance to escape the cold and discover how people have stayed both warm and fashionable during cold, wet and windy weather from 1890 onwards.”

The exhibition is on at the Beecroft Art Gallery, Victoria Avenue from 10th January – 1st May 2015.
