Young People from Church And School Youth Groups Will Be Sleeping In A Slum This Weekend

April 16, 2015 by David Elcock

Over 30 young people from Blaze: a network of church youth groups across South East Essex are taking part in Slum Survivor this weekend. All money raised will be divided equally and donated to projects that the charity Soul Action supports in poor communities in South Africa, Zimbabwe and around the world.

Money raised will also support young people locally through the work of Southend YMCA.

From 9 am Saturday 18th to 9am Sunday 19th April The teenagers will build, live and sleep in their own 'slum houses' made from basic discarded materials in ‘wasteland’ behind St Peters Church, Eastbourne Grove, Westcliff-on-Sea . They'll source and eat simple food and walk miles to collect water. Challenges will be set that someone living in a slum would face every day. All technology is banned through this 24 hour event.

Samantha Dunlop, a church youth worker and one of the organisers said, “Blaze does Slum Survivor aims to raise awareness about urban poverty and to aid the plight of the world’s poor. The young people will sample a little bit of what it’s like to live in slum conditions for 24 hours – where over a billion people worldwide spend their lifetimes.”

Our thanks to Connections Interiors and Worsley Wines who donated boxes and pallets from which we will build our slum houses.
