Youth Council Promotes UK Parliament Week

October 28, 2024

As part of UK Parliament Week (18 to 24 November), Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Youth Voice & Elections teams are hosting a series of interactive workshops for secondary schools across Southend.

These sessions will encourage young people to explore democratic values and help build a thriving community in Southend.

The workshops aim to inspire the next generation of changemakers and will include elections for Youth Council Champions. These champions will work alongside Southend City Youth Council, representing young people and contributing to the city's growth.

The Southend Youth Voice team, based in Children's Services, works to ensure that young people’s voices are heard across the council and beyond. Partnering with statutory and voluntary organisations, they empower children, young people, and families to share their views and make a positive difference in Southend.

Cllr Laurie Burton, cabinet member for children, young people, and SEND, said: “Giving young people the chance to have their voices heard is crucial for shaping the future of Southend. UK Parliament Week is a wonderful opportunity to engage and empower the next generation, helping them understand their role in our city’s democracy and inspiring them to take action.”

Southend City Youth Council is open to young people aged 11 to 18 living or attending school in the city. With over 50 members, they meet monthly to address concerns and work with local leaders to improve services.

For schools interested in hosting a workshop, please email Emma O'Hara, youth participation worker at the council, at: EmmaOHara@Southend.gov.uk.

Young people interested in joining the Southend City Youth Council can attend the next meeting on 6 November, 5pm to 7pm.
