The Leigh Ramblers' Under 15s girls team won the Essex County Girls League beating Bealonians 3-2 on penalties. Congratulations to all the girls.
Leigh resident Des Freedman, an academic lecturing in communications at Goldsmiths University, London, has been chosen to chair the Media Reform Coalition. They have been invited to take part in government consultations on proposed media legislation in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal and the subsequent recommendations of the Leveson enquiry.
Renowned Leigh artist Simon Kirk has two works shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2013. No stranger to the Summer Exhibition, Simon of the Estuary Collective Gallery, will know soon whether he has been accepted for this year's show. He has previously been chosen to show in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition back in 2010 AND he sold the work. To be short-listed twice is a rare achievement. Royal Mail confirmed today that the Leigh sorting office will close. Services will be moved to Southend on July 1st despite 8,000 people signing a petition to oppose this move. According to Royal Mail this closure is part of a nationwide modernisation programme.
The Palace Theatre are holding auditions for their Summer Youth Project, which this year will be "Annie", on Sunday April 28th. This project itself runs from July 28th to August 11th. The fifth Southend Film festival launches later this month with a jam-packed programme of film screenings and special guests celebrating a focus on British Independent films. The festival runs from May 2nd until May 6th.

A eight-day public enquiry has been set to start on June 18th to look into the points of contention between Havens Hospices and Southend council in this, the latest episode in the long-running saga of Havens' attempt to get planning permission to build on protected green belt land in Leigh.
Ship Full of Bombs, an alternative radio station broadcast every Monday to Thursday evening from 8pm onwards is hosted by a variety of Leigh-ites including Al Johnson, Dan Newman, Zoe Howe, and Daryl Easlea.
The Bell hotel building, which has been derelict for many years, may at last be restored. Plans to turn the building into a restaurant and flats have been submitted to Southend council planning committee. A decision to accept or reject the plans will be made on June 26th. Neighbours and other interested parties have until 3rd May (Friday) to comment on the scheme. The reference number is 13/00396/OUTM
Southend Borough Council plans to close Leigh Library. We need to take action here. If you live, work or study in Leigh please sign the attached petition originated by Leigh Town Council to try and save our much loved community resource. Circulate to all your friends. A jubilant, and exhausted, Mike Wells of Uptomen pictured with his Marathon medal. He completed the 26 mile race in just over five hours and raised money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Well done Mike.
